ஒரு திசையில் ஒளி வீசும் பொழுது , அத்திசையில் ஒளியூடுருவா ஒரு பொருள் இருந்தால், அப்பொருளால் ஒளி தடுக்கப்பட்டு, அப்பொருளின் பின்னே ஒளி விழாமல் இருக்கும் பகுதிக்கு நிழல் என்று பெயர். ஒளிமறையுரு. கதிரவன் ஒளியை மறைத்து நிற்கும் பகுதியில் வெப்பம் குறைவாக இருப்பதால், குளிர்ச்சி, காப்பு. தெளிந்த நீர் அல்லது பளபளப்பான தளத்தின் மீது ஒரு பொருளின் புற உருவம் எதிரொளியாகப் பட்டுத் தோன்றும் ஒளியுரு. ஏதிரொளியுரு
