முற்காலத்தில் தமிழர்கள் முதன்மையாக எள்ளில் இருந்து மட்டுமே நெய் எடுத்து பயன்படுத்தினர், அதையே எள்+நெய்எண்ணெய் என அழைத்தனர்.
எண்ணெய் என்ற சொல் பழகிப்போனதால் மற்ற நெய்களையும் எண்ணெய் என்றே அழைத்தனர், (எ.கா.) தேங்காய் எண்ணெய், கடலை எண்ணெய்.
எண்ணெய் என்ற சொல் குழப்பத்தை ஏற்படுத்தியதால், ‘நல்’ என்ற சொல்லை சேர்த்து ‘நல்லெண்ணெய்’ என அழைத்தனர், ஆக எண்ணெய்யும், நல்லெண்ணெய்யும் வழங்கும் பொருள் ஒன்றே.(Sesame oil)

தேங்காய் நெய், கடலை நெய், ஆமணக்கு நெய், பசு/ஆட்டு நெய், பசு/ஆட்டு வெண்ணெய், கல்நெய், வன்நெய், மண்நெய், கச்சா நெய் என வழங்குவதே சரியாகும்.
