அடை (aṭai) — noun
Resort, attaining to, அடுத்தல் A kind of cake, wafer, ஓர்பணிகாரம் Cake or bread in general அப்பவருக்கம் Incubation, அவயம் A leaf, இலை Gravity, weight, கனம் A slight support or prop, தாங்கி [in grammar.] A prefix, qualifying word, or clause, adjunct, accompaniment, அடைமொழி. In this meaning it includes உரிச்சொல் or adjectives and adverbs. (p.) A pledge, கொதுவை Tribute, the king's proportion of the produce of the land whether one-sixth or one-tenth, or otherwise, நிலவிறை. (c.) அடைகாக்க–அடைகிடக்க — To sit on eggs, incubate. அடைகாய் — Betel and areca nut. அடைகொடுக்க — To render the kings's share of the produce. அடைகோழி — A hen that sits on eggs. அடைக்காய் — Areca nut. அடைக்குத்தகை — Revenue from grain as farmed out by government.

To enclose, encompass, shut up, encage, fold cattle, &c., புகுத்த To secure, keep safely, conceal, காப்புச்செய்ய. சுவாமிதிருவுளத்தடைத்தார். Swamy thought –kept in his mind அடைகல் — A stone placed at the entrance of a sluice to prevent the water from flowing, மதகடைக்குங்கல். அடைகுளம் — A tank with no outlet, pent up, stagnant water. அடைசீலை — Cloth steeped in a medical preparation and put in the mouth for a sore throat, &c., அடைசுபொட்டணம். அடைத்தகுரல் — A hoarse, husky voice. அடைபட — To be closed, shut up, அடைக்கப்பட. 2. To be obstructed, as a passage, &c., தடைபட. அடைப்பன் — Obstruction of the throat, quinsy in cattle, ஓர்வியாதி.
